How whitening works
Oxygen, pigments and why only natural teeth change shade.
Professional whitening gels release oxygen that breaks down pigment molecules inside the enamel. Lamp activation in the clinic speeds the reaction; home trays work more slowly over several weeks.
Before you start
- Hygiene first: plaque blocks the gel.
- Fillings, veneers and crowns do not change colour, so plan cosmetic work after whitening.
- Sensitivity for a day or two is normal and passes.
